Quietways – Narre Warren East
Having already lived on site, these clients were familiar with the qualities (and challenges) this site presented. They sought to find innovative architectural solutions for their unique rural setting that would serve as a contemporary reinterpretation of the country landscape. They desired dramatic views, absolute privacy and a sense of tranquillity.
Nestled in a quiet valley, only minutes from the outskirts of sprawling suburbia, the resulting home is low-impact with several sustainable features. The timbers used originate from managed plantations, the windows are double glazed, passive heating and cooling methods have been used, and all rainwater is collected, whilst grey water is treated on site to cater for all domestic needs. The design balances comfort, necessities and optimal views whilst still engaging with the landscape. The material palette was carefully considered, which, combined with simple architectural principals, creates a harmonious relationship between a modest family home and a delicate site. This project was big on ideas but modest in architectural statement, opening up a totally new direction for Graham Jones Design.
